Letter to Santa examples
Sometimes it helps to see a few real-sounding letters before your child picks up a pencil. These three are written the way children actually talk, not polished. Use them for ideas, then let your child write it their own way.
For tips on how to start and what to include, see our guide on what to write in a letter to Santa.
Example letter from a 4 year old
Dear Santa, I am Poppy and I am 4. I was good mostly. I helped mummy feed the ducks. I would like a unicorn that is pink and a big digger for the sand. Do reindeer like carrots or apples? Love Poppy and my cat Biscuit
Why it works: Written down by a grown-up, word for word. It's short, honest and full of personality, which is all a letter needs.
Example letter from a 7 year old
Dear Santa, My name is Alfie and I am 7. This year I learned to swim without armbands and I got a sticker for it. For Christmas I would really like a Lego fire station and a torch for reading under my covers. My little sister wants a doll that cries real tears. How do you get round the whole world in one night? Is it magic or are you just really fast? From Alfie
Why it works: It mentions something they're proud of, asks Santa a question and keeps the list short and specific.
Example letter from a 10 year old
Dear Santa, It's Maya, I'm 10 now. I know you're very busy so I'll keep this short (ish). This year I started guitar lessons and I can play three songs, but my brother says they all sound the same. I also helped my nan with her shopping every Saturday. I'd love some guitar picks, a sketchbook and the new Wings of Fire book. Also if you have time please could Nan's knee get better. Say hi to the elves. Does Rudolph's nose actually glow or is that just a story? Merry Christmas, Maya
Why it works: Older children can be chattier and funnier. Thinking about someone else gives the letter real warmth.
When they're ready, your child can write their own letter online and Santa will write back to them by name. Start from the Letters to Santa home page.
